Ein Sondergericht in Den Haag hat einen ehemaligen Kommandanten der Kosovo Befreiungsarmee KLA mehrerer Kriegsverbrechen schuldig gesprochen.

Salih Mustafa wurde für Folter in mehreren Fällen und Mord zu 26 Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt. Er hatte die Taten nach Überzeugung der Anklage 1999 an mindestens sechs Kosovo-Albanern begangen. Es ist das erste Mal, dass ein KLA-Befehlshaber verurteilt wurde.

Die Vorsitzende Richterin Mappie Veldt-Foglia bezeichnete das Verfahren als als einen Meilenstein, der die Versöhnung fördern könnte: "Es scheint ein Missverständnis zu geben, dass diese Anklagen gegen die Kosovo-Befreiungsarmee als solche oder gegen die Bevölkerung des Kosovo insgesamt erhoben wurden. Nichts könnte weiter von der Wahrheit entfernt sein. Es war das Volk des Kosovo, das durch das Parlament beschlossen hat, diese Institution zu schaffen und zu ermächtigen."

Das Kosovo-Tribunal in Den Haag ist Bestandteil des Justizsystems des Kosovos. Es existiert seit 2015 und ist mit internationalen Richterinnen und Richtern besetzt. Salih Mustafa wurde 2020 in Pristina festgenommen und hatte in Den Haag seine Unschuld beteuert. Das Urteil gegen ihn wurde im Namen des Kosovo-Volkes gesprochen. Auch der ehemalige Kosovo-Präsident Hashim Thaci ist in Den Haag angeklagt, unter anderem wegen Mordes. Auch er weist die Anschuldigungen zurück.

WASHINGTON -- Former U.S. Balkans envoy Robert Gelbard says that the Marty report on Kosovo organ trafficking "must be investigated because the accusations are very serious".

The Council of Europe rapporteur's document said the Kosovo Albanian KLA kidnapped and murdering Serb civilians in the province for their body parts in 1999 and 2000.

Gelbard said he believed that the accusations naming ex-KLA and current Kosovo PM Hashim Thaci as the leader of the group which traded in human organs were "not related to the issue of the Kosovo independence".

"The accusations against Hashim Thaci, stated in the CoE rapporteur Dick Marty’s report are extremely important and so serious that an investigation about that must be conducted," said Gelbard for Voice of America.

He went on to say that the Swiss senator, who brought to light illegal CIA prisons in one of his previous investigations, was "prone to sensationalism", but that Marty's report nevertheless contained "serious accusations that must be investigated". ...
